Jatamansi Essential Oil

Would you climb up to an altitude of 10,000 feet just to collect the stems of a plant? Sounds insane, doesn’t it? Well, botanists from all over the world scale these high altitudes in the Himalayas of Nepal, China and India just to get their hands on the Jatamansi plant. It’s a small plant that grows to 3 feet tall and sprouts beautiful pink, bell-shaped flowers. Its roots have a lot of hairy spikes protruding from them which lead to the Arabs naming this plant “the Indian spike”. But obviously, people wouldn’t climb so high up just to admire its beauty. They’re more interested in its oil: jatamansi essential oil.

 

Jatamansi essential oil is extracted by crushing the roots of the Nardostachy Jatamanshi plant and then distilling them to the get the rich, amber-colored essential oil. It has a sweet, woody, moss-like odor. Some people even describe its aroma as spicy. Inside jatamansi essential oil you’ll find different chemical compounds such as aristolene, calarene, clalarenol, coumarin, dihydroazulenes, jatamanshinic acid, nardol, nardostachone, valerianol, valeranal and valeranone.
